I took a big step today. A really exciting step. I sent in C’s application for a Diabetic Alert Dog (D.A.D.). Please help us say a prayer, think good thoughts, whatever you do to help him get approved and start moving forward on the process.

WOW! Praying indeed, my friend
That’s awesome Em! Keep us posted
That’s great! Keep everyone posted. There is only one blogger I have come across that writes of her amazing experience with a dog named Ruby. No cgms can duplicate what these dogs do. The dog will not fail if child or parent does not hear an alarm because the dog will rouse the parent, can even be trained to push a button to dial 911. A dog is not a machine but an intelligent, loyal being. These dogs should be properly trained and available for use in lieu of, and/or in addition to, cgms. And the price of these dogs need to come down. Training an explosive sniffing dog (same general training), costs the purchaser $10,000. Why do DADs cost double or triple that? And every boy needs a dog, diabetic or not.
I do follow Where’s Wuby on facebook (I think that’s the Ruby you’re referring to). The organization we applied to has dogs at different levels of training with different costs. All the way from puppy exposed to diabetic scent, to started training, to completely finished training. The finished dogs are $10-12k but I’m not sure about other groups you might’ve seen with much higher pricing.
